Josef Gočár designed the impressive Rondo Cubist Armchair in 1922. To commemorate the 100th anniversary of his design, we created a replica last year. The armchair was originally created for the Bank of the Czechoslovak Legions building in Prague on Poříčí - Legiobanky, after World War I. Gočár and other architects aimed to create an artistic form that would express the national character of the new Czechoslovak state. Gočár's design shifted the division of matter from sloping surfaces to combining arched and semicircular shapes, creating a variant of the international Art Deco movement known as Rondocubism. The chair is made of oak and ash veneer and Sorensen leather. This chair exemplifies how furniture production and use have evolved over the past century, both in terms of morphology and philosophy.
